The regeneration of the historic, Grade II Farsons brewery is a landmark project that saw one of the country’s finest, 20th century industrial buildings transformed into an outstanding, mixed-use destination. Despite the complexity of this undertaking, the Brewhouse project resulted in the excellent resolution to successfully preserve and adapt both the internal and external fabric of the iconic building, for a new lease of life. A truly remarkable example of sensitive adaptive re-use of spaces for contemporary times, tied in with authentic appreciation of industrial architectural heritage.

One of Malta’s oldest and largest mills, has been successfully restored and adapted into an accessible-for-all, cultural centre for the community. The combination of the building’s past heritage and its new use together with its reintegrated industrial mechanism into educational reuse, was notably commended.

The project included the Conservation of the ex-Deutsche-Welle Radio Station and the adaptive reuse of Industrial Heritage leading to the setting up of the first Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Malta. Appreciation for this commendation went for the creation of a new destination but also for what it brought to its wider context and the additional efforts to realise challenges of sustainability and circularity, for which this submission is a perfect example.
