“Green islands” were bridged over the culvert’s air space from one side of the embankment to the other, creating a new plane for trees, shrubs and smaller ecosystems to emerge. This successful project aims at healing a scar, through what could be a typological solution for other spaces in Malta, through integration by using design in the urban landscape.

Although modest in scale, an undeniable positive impact was made to the urban environment, through the introduction of a simply designed, geometric green solution, resulting in an overall pleasing landscape. The jury commended the seamless incorporation of a green touch into the densely urbanised locality. This economic, well-designed canopy provided a fresh approach in design aspect: a simple construction aimed at introducing green areas.
